WHERE ARE WE GOIN'? WHEN DO WE GO?
HOW TO USE YOUR CAPTAIN COME-ALONG GAMES
Captain Come-Along was created by a traveling father for his little girl.
Since he made so many trips away he wanted to be sure that she always knew where he was—she could look at her map to see how far away he was. She could count off the days he was gone, and she could even know the time and day of the week he would be back home . . . maybe with a surprise! She even had a phone number to call, if needed.
Mothers, fathers and special friends don’t like to be away from you but there are many reasons they must travel. With Captain Come-Along you can be part of the trip. It’ll be fun and you can learn about travel!
CAPTAIN COME- ALONG TRAVEL MAP INSTRUCTIONS:
Before you use your map, remove it from the box. Because it is coated with plastic, it will be curled from storage. Carefully roll it in the opposite direction and put it back in the box for a while before or lay it on a flat surface such as a table until it flattens out. You might want to put a book on it to speed things up. You can also put it on the refrigerator with magnets so it can be checked daily.
Begin your interactive Captain Come-Along Travel Game by finding out these important facts about the trip.

Sometimes people need to travel to other lands. If your trip is to a far away country, locate it on the World Map by placing a dot as close as you can to the actual spot. Find your own city on the World Map—then connect them with a line. Do you that you are only seeing half of the world on this map? What you see is nearly 13,000 miles across. How many miles across is America?
Do you know that there are time change zones across the world? When it’s 1:00 in Dallas, it’s 2:00 in New York but it’s only 11:00 in California! Sometimes things happen while on a trip – like planes and trains starting late. The return time changes. Don’t be afraid when your loved one isn’t exactly on time. That’s part of traveling.

If the trip is longer than 31 days, erase the crossed--off days and start over with the number 2 equaling day number 32 (number 10 would equal day 40) make an X on the number of days until the trip is finished . . . or ask an adult.

4. What day of the week will the trip start? Find out and draw a circle around the day on the “TIME TO GO” chart (Green Box) What day does the trip end? Draw a circle around the day on the “COME HOME” chart (pink).
5. What kind of transportation will be used on the trip? A car? An airplane? Make an X next to the correct answer. Maybe all kinds of travel will be used. A taxi cab is an automobile and a subway is a train too. It will be fun to ask. What is your favorite way to travel?
Check your travel map every day so you will know when to get excited about their return…maybe you could have a special surprise for them when they get home!
YOU CAN USE YOUR CAPTAIN COME- ALONG WHEN YOU REALLY GO ON A TRIP TOO!
Circle THE City to be visited and your city, but don’t draw in a line. As you pass the cities on the map or points that Mom or Dad show you, draw a line to them. This way you will see how far you’ve been and how far you have left to go. You can mark off the “COUNT” days and circle the “COME AND GO” days as well. Use your “MILEAGE GAUGE” to see how far the trip is. Ask a grown up how many miles to go and place your “MILEAGE GAUGE” on the map to get an idea of the number of miles.
EXPLORING YOUR MAP
Here are some things you can do to make the Travel Map more interesting.
Get Mom, Dad or an adult to help you with the answers. Or you can surprise Mom or Dad and try to find out the answers by yourself. America is a wonderful land and it has many surprises and interesting facts.
THE CAPTAIN COME-ALONG TRAVEL GAME (Reverse side)
The Captain will take you on a trip that’s almost like a real trip – with all of the good and sometimes not so good adventures that real travelers experience. If it gets hard, don’t give up because you will always make it and have fun!
NOTE: Be sure that your game board is flat before you try to play. Remove game board from box and roll it in the opposite direction and put it back in the box for a while, or put it on a flat surface and lay a book on it for a few minutes.
TO PLAY BY YOURSELF
You will need two different small coins – a dime and a penny will do. Choose one coin for a moving piece on the board and the other coin is for flipping to see how many spaces you will move. You could use other objects or a small toy as a moving piece if you wish.
WARNING: NEVER PUT COINS, SMALL TOYS
OR ANY OTHER MOVING OR FLIPPING PIECES
IN YOUR MOUTH!

To begin place your moving coin (or piece) in the START POSITION. FLIP THE OTHER COIN! If it lands on “HEADS” (the face side) you may move 2 Spaces Ahead. If it lands on “TAILS” (no face) you can only move ahead 1 Space. If the space you land on has a message such as “AHEAD 2” or “BACK 2”, then you must do whatever it says . . . sometimes it’s Good Luck, other times it’s not. Just like real travel, sometimes there’s smooth weather - -other time you must fly around storms. But you always get there just fine. Traveling is fun!
TWO or MORE PLAYERS
If there is more than one player, each player will need to have a different moving piece. Again, this can be done using coins. Example: Player One can have a dime showing heads. Player Two can have a penny showing heads. Player Three can have a dime showing Tails and Player Four can have a penny showing Tails. And, as in the case of one player, you may want to use different dried beans, popcorn or even bits of cereal! Each player flips the coin in turn and does whatever the game reads. It’s fun to see who will get to Granny’s house first—and eat up all of the cookies! Hey kids! Let’s take a trip.
IMPORTANT: When the game is not in use put all of the markers, game board and Mileage Gauge back in the box for safe storage – you’ll be able to find everything easily next time. When the markers are used up, there are any number of available wax pencils that will mark on plastic. Be sure they are erasable. If the game board becomes too wrinkled or gets destroyed or becomes unusable, return it to kidsburg toys at the address shown in the ADULTS HANDBOOK and we will gladly replace it for a small fee. Good luck on your trip.
HEY! KIDS! THE CAPTAIN SAYS, "LET'S GET TO PACKIN".
